For the last two years Eva has been working on a very unique art practice around burying herself and others in soil. During her research on death as transition or ‘rebirth’, combining modern ritual and ancient ceremonial practice, Bartels has created a body of work including, paintings, performances, drawings, ceremonial objects and videos.

The series takes place at the intersection of visual art, performance and installation. Bartels moulds these forms together under the term ritual installation performance (RIP), and breathing womb installations. This is a site-specific performance that blends participatory ritual with visual storytelling, creating a living altar to grief, transformation, and connect deeper to the land and soil.

A video collaboration with multiple filmmakers including Vincent Moon—known for his work documenting indigenous rituals and global ceremonies—captures these acts with reverence and cinematic intimacy.

Rite of Renewal participation

“I have performed these Rites of Renewal last year in Taos (New Mexico), Topanga LA, Ojai, Burgundy, Ibiza and in The Netherlands. They have all deepened my relationship with the land and soil. And expanded my knowledge of indigenous song and ritual connected to the land and the history of the land, the people, the animals and all else that grows and lives from and with the land.”
